Why Japanese?

I have always been fascinated by Japanese culture: sakura, kimono, noh, Shinto, architecture... I simply cannot list them all! I have been to Japan five years ago, and I am always longing to visit again!

I am a MA student from the East Asian Language and Cultures program, with a focus on the modern cultural history of China. Since Japan has a huge impact on the trajectory of modernization of China, to learn Japanese language will certainly facilitate my research in a inspiring way. I also greatly admire how Japan perfectly preserves its traditional culture and meanwhile becomes one of the most developed and affluent countries in the world. I think it is a very good example for all East Asian countries to draw lessons from, especially when thinking about what the word "modernity" means.

  1. It's amazing that you were able to visit Japan once and are now learning the language! I hope taking this class will help you with your research!

  2. That is an interesting perspective that you bring to this class. As a masters student do you feel like you have a different perspective on intro level college courses than the general Columbia student body? I know I do as a GS student.

    1. For Japanese language, I think I am a beginner just as every one else. But my Chinese background does help me a lot in learning Japanese. What is your unique perspective from the general student body?
